Tailoring polymethylhydrosiloxane as candidate material for vitreous humour substitution: physical properties and in vitro toxicity

UNPAD Team Tailors Polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) as a Safer, Transparent Candidate for Vitreous Humour Substitution (SDG 3 & SDG 9)
A Universitas Padjadjaran group synthesized PMHS via hydrolysis–condensation of dichloromethylsilane (DCMS) and showed that solvent choice + mild-temperature condensation (35 °C) can tune viscosity into clinically relevant ranges. Using diethyl ether (DE) yielded a medium-viscosity sample (η = 2.10 Pa·s; γ = 21 mN/m; n = 1.3982), while dichloromethane (DCM) produced a low-viscosity sample (η = 1.10 Pa·s; γ = 20 mN/m; n = 1.3960). Both were ~100% transparent and non-irritant in HET-CAM (in-vitro) tests.
These values align with vitreous-substitute benchmarks: low-viscosity PDMS ≈ 0.9–1.2 Pa·s; medium 2.0–2.4 Pa·s, and additional diopters +3.0D to +3.5D (PMHS measured +3.016D / +3.120D).
